Mesa and Sky

I remember I was in Arches National Park with heavy clouds and rain over Delicate Arch. I was planning on hiking out for another sunset session, but the clouds just looked too ominous. Looking west I saw a small opening in the sky and made the difficult decision to leave Arches for a different location entirely. One of the most difficult realities about photography is that you can only be in one place at a time. Where you choose to photograph is up to planning, luck, determination and (often) existential angst. On this day I am glad I chose to leave one place for another. Even though it was a self-induced-stressful drive to the new spot where I arrived just in time to hop out of the truck and set up my camera. It was a rushed hour drive and a frantic few minutes of photographing, but the light was totally worth it. Most of the time chasing the light is much more casual with me. But sometimes you have to take a chance-- even if it means a little second guessing on the way and a lot of hurry once you arrive. We can only try to be cool.
